Pastor Joe's Book Vault
The following is a list of great books
I've read over the years, that I consider "must reads" for
anyone looking at this list, interested in exploring and enhancing
their r elationship with God. They are in no particular order,
so take some time to look over them all, and see which ones
might be in line with what's on your heart right now. Check
back once in a while as I'll update and add to the list.
Stomping Out the Darkness by Neil T. Anderson and Dave Park
I know I said these are in no particular order, but I did place this one at the
top of the list for a reason. If there is one book on this list I feel all students
should read, it's this one. It tackles straight on the issues of identity, worth
and esteem, how these things affect us in the adolescent years, and how Jesus
plays the most important factor in all of these issues. It helps students find
their identity in Christ and embrace it as they grow into adults. Doing this
book in a small group setting would be great, and a study guide or teachers guide
is available for whatever adult you might have guiding you.
Dangerous Wonder by Michael Yaconelli
"The Adventure of Childlike Faith." This book explores what Jesus means
when he urges that we are to have faith like a child. Yaconelli's style is easy
going and personable, and his thoughts and stories will make you laugh, cry and
guarantee to challenge you. This is an easy read that will truly bless and encourage
your faith.
Messy Spirituality by Michael Yaconelli
"God's Annoying Love for Imperfect People." The good news is, that
means God loves you and I. The bad news is, that means God loves those who we
struggle to love just as much. This book is all about the powerful word "Grace," and
is sure to challenge you even more than his first book.
A Note on Mike Yaconelli - Unfortunately,
Mike Yaconelli unexpectedly passed away in October, 2003. His death was tough
on many, but the response of the masses that loved him showed what an amazing
man he was. To read my thoughts on this loss, check out my article In
Memory of an Inspiration - Mike Yaconelli
The Lost Message of Jesus by Steve Chalke and Alan Mann
This is a terrific book which examines what Jesus message truly meant to the
culture he was in, and what it implies for us here today.
Experiencing God by Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V. King
This book was foundational and transformational in my relationship with God.
In fact, this book is really the point in my life when I started to view what
I am supposed to have with God is a relationship. This book opened my eyes to
so much, and really was a springboard to what I consider to be my recent relationship
with God, even though I read it "way back" in college. It was encouraging
and inspirational, and I recommend it to all.
The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren
I know many of you may have heard of this book, and may be reluctant due to it's
main stream success. But I will tell you that few books summarize so completely
what a life with God involves. There are so many great truth's revealed in this
book, my copy is filled with underlines, notes, asterisks, and whatever else
emphasizing what I thought was important in it. It is sure to enhance your life
and walk with God.
